Bishoujo Senshi Sailor Moon( Pretty Soldier Sailor Moon) Created by Naoko Takeuchi is a multi media franchise that has spanned over two decades that has shaped the face of the modern Magical Girl genre.
What is Sailor Moon about?
"Sailor Moon is about a 14 year girl called Usagi Tuskino who find this cat name Luna on the street. This cat is a magical cat who gives Usagi a magical brooch so she can transform into Sailor Moon, the champion of Love and Justice. Her mission is to find the other Sailor Senshi so they can find an lost Princess of an ancient Kingdom which wield an magical artifact called the Legendary Sliver Crystal which have unlimited power. They have to find her and the crystal before both of them fall into the hands of evil."
How many versions are there?
Sailor Moon Manga- This is where it all begin. 60 acts/chapters broken into five arcs ( 12 volumes for the 2nd edition and 10 volumes for the Eternal Edition) which each act/ chapter is roughly 40-60 pages long.
Codename: Sailor V Manga- A prequel featuring Minako Anio as Sailor V one year prior to the events in Sailor Moon.
Sailor Moon Original Anime- 200 episodes broken into five seasons/ story arcs which roughly based off the manga. The most popular version of the Sailor Moon franchise. There are two official English dubs of Sailor Moon( DiC/ Cloverway ( 1995) and Viz Media ( 2014) )
Sailor Moon Crystal- An anime reboot of the series that follows the original manga story line closer.
Sera Myu- Musicals that are based from the manga, anime or is original to the musical itself. The Musicals has over 31 separate productions with over 800 total performances.
PGSM- Pretty Guardian Sailor Moon is a 49 episodes and two specials live action series that is based off only the Dark Kingdom arc.

200 episodes is a lot for the original series. Are there any guides that pinpoint the main plot episodes?
Anime Guides- The Sailor Moon anime is five seasons which span over 200 episodes plus 3 movies and some specials.. That's a lot of episodes for someone who is coming into the fandom. Especially if you break it down by season.
- Sailor Moon Classic 46 episodes -31 plot 15 filler
- Sailor Moon R 43 Episodes - 36 plot 7 filler ( if you don't consider Doom tree as filler but it's own separate arc but if you consider as filler 23 Plot and 20 filler )
- Sailor Moon S 39 Episodes - 29 plot 10 filler
- Sailor Moon SuperS 38 episodes -23 plot 15 filler
- Sailor Moon StarS 34 episodes 25 plot 9 Filler
So in total that's 200 Episodes =144 Plot 56 Filler (but you Count Doom tree arc as filler it's 131 plot 69 filler )

Wow! That's a lot! Where should I begin my journey?
You can start anywhere that you feel comfortable with. There is no wrong or right way to starting your journey in SM. I would recommend Crystal along with the Manga for someone who want to get into Sailor Moon. The simple reason is time and you would get the main premise of Sailor Moon since it's the most recent version of SM. If you don't like it you wouldn't lose that much time over it because it would not take you that long to knock out 38 episodes in this day and age of binge watching.I'm not saying not watch the 90′s anime but it can become daunting to watch 200 episodes with somethings become very repetitive..The 90′s anime is something that if you liked Crystal, you thirst for more Sailor Moon, and want to see what people grew up on it something that you should most def watch. The 90′s anime gives a more expended overview to the world of SM.
